The prostate, a gland in the male reproductive system, produces Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). A Prostate Blood Test measures the level of PSA in the blood sample to assess prostate health and screen for prostate cancer. Taking proactive steps for proper monitoring helps maintain prostate and overall well-being. Ideal for men over 50, having signs of painful/frequent urination, blood in urine, or pelvic pain, or anyone with a family history of prostate disorders.

Who Needs a Prostate Blood Test?

  1. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as painful urination, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, or blood in the urine must consider a PSA Test.
  2. It is especially recommended for
  • Men over the age of 50 or
  • Men of Black ethnic background
  • Those with a biological family history of prostate cancer

What Gets Tested

This test includes both free and total PSA measurements, as well as the PSA ratio — offering a clearer assessment than a single PSA reading.

Markers included:

  • Total Prostate Specific Antigen (Total PSA)
  • Free Prostate Specific Antigen (Free PSA)
  • PSA Ratio (Free PSA ÷ Total PSA)

What This Prostate Test Measures

Total PSA
  • Measures the overall amount of prostate-specific antigen in your blood
  • Elevated levels may signal prostate enlargement, inflammation, or cancer — though not always
Free PSA
  • The unbound portion of PSA in your bloodstream
  • Higher % of free PSA is generally associated with lower prostate cancer risk
PSA Ratio
  • Helps distinguish between benign conditions (like BPH) and more serious concerns
  • A lower ratio may require further investigation

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is PSA?

Prostate-Specific Antigen is a protein made by the prostate. It’s found in
small amounts in healthy men, but levels can rise with age, inflammation, or
disease.

Is a high PSA always a sign of cancer?

No. PSA can also be elevated due to benign prostate enlargement, infection, or
recent ejaculation. That’s why the PSA ratio is helpful.

What is a normal PSA level?

The normal level of PSA test generally depends on the person’s age and prostate health.

  • A PSA level from 0 to 2.5ng/ml is considered normal in men within the age limit of 40-50 years.
  • A PSA level from 2.5 to 3.5ng/ml is normal for the age limit of 50-60 years.
  • A PSA level of 3.5 to 4.5ng/ml is considered normal for the age between 60-70 years.
  • For ages above 70 years, 4.5 to 5.5ng/ml is considered a normal PSA level.

Can I take this test if I’m on medication?

Yes, but let your doctor know, as some medications may affect PSA levels.

How often should I test?

Annually if over 50 or earlier if you have risk factors. More frequent testing
may be needed to monitor changes.

How to prepare for the prostate test?

To ensure accurate PSA test results, avoid sexual activity (especially ejaculation) for at least 24 hours before the test. Additionally, certain medications can affect PSA levels, so it's important to consult your healthcare provider for any specific precautions or instructions to follow before getting tested.

How to get a Prostate Test?

You can book a prostate blood test (PSA test) directly through The National Blood Test Clinic. Choose your nearest phlebotomy clinic, book an appointment, and have your blood sample taken by a qualified professional. The process is simple, and results are usually available within a week.

Can a blood test for prostate (PSA) alone diagnose prostate cancer?

No, a PSA test alone cannot confirm whether abnormal PSA levels are caused by cancer or non-cancerous conditions. If PSA levels are elevated, doctors may recommend further investigations, such as a prostate biopsy, to determine if cancer is present.

When will I get the results?

At The National Blood Test Clinic, your PSA blood test results will typically be available within a week. Once processed, the results will be securely shared with you.
